Camps Bay Beach Cape Town, South Africa

Give us the wide-angle view: what kind of beach are we talking about?

Camps Bay, located in Cape Town, is known as the city's "party beach" due to the abundance of bars, restaurants, and hotels along its promenade. In the busiest months of December and January, it can get busy and, okay, maybe even a little tacky despite its cheerful and active atmosphere. But the scenery is breathtaking, with the rugged Twelve Apostles mountains in the background. Restaurants of exceptional quality can be found among the rowdy beach bars, so you should go.

Lovely. So how do we get there?

You may park right next to Camps Bay (if you're lucky enough to find a place) and walk over if you want to feel the sand between your toes for a minute. The long stretch of eateries and watering holes just across the street is another perk. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery while grabbing a bite to eat or a refreshing drink before returning to the beach.

What about equipment—if we're looking for more than a wade, can we rent gear?

Unless you plan to stay in one of the hotels, you will need to provide your own equipment.

That's to say, if we can even wade. Is the water worth a dip?

Cape Town's water is more suited for sightseeing than swimming due to the city's consistently low temperatures.

Okay, how about the sand, in that case?

The perfect beach would have beautiful, fluffy, pure white sand.

If we want to grab a seat (and a bite to eat), what are our best bets?

For example, if you're hungry in the morning, you can dine at La Belle, and if you're craving Mexican food, you can go to Del Mar. It's all the rage to hang out at the brand-new bar Chinchilla.

How best can we plan a visit to Camps Bay?

The beach at Camps Bay may get rowdy and crowded with European tourists in the summer. Of course, if that's the atmosphere you're aiming for, it's perfect; however, if you were hoping for a tranquil afternoon to relax on a towel and read a book, this might be a bit too scene-y.
