How to Visit the Best Beach in the World, Whitehaven Beach

 Fans of sand and surf will be overjoyed to learn that Queensland is home to the best beach in the world. Whitehaven Beach, located in the Whitsunday Islands, won TripAdvisor's "Travellers Choice Best Beach in the World 2021" award, making it one of the islands' most recognizable landmarks.

If you haven't yet seen the award-winning marvel that is Whitehaven Beach, we've put together this guide to help you learn more about it.

What is Whitehaven Beach?

Whitehaven is the most famous beach in the Whitsundays, if not all of Queensland, due to its stunning beauty and its combination of white silica sands (98% silica to be exact) and blue waters. The Whitsunday Islands are home to this particular 7-kilometer stretch, which can be found on Whitsunday Island.

The Whitsunday Islands National Park safeguards this section of the Great Barrier Reef, making it not just one of the cleanest and most environmentally friendly beaches in the world, but also one of the most beautiful. It's not just the beach itself, though, that visitors should check out. The nearby Hill Inlet is home to a diverse array of marine life, and the Hill Inlet Lookout provides some of the best views in the area (just look for a tour that includes a walk this way).


Where to stay

Whitehaven Beach is a popular destination for tourists, however most people remain on the mainland, in Airlie Beach, which is the principal port of entry to the islands. Because of the large number of budget-conscious backpackers, lodgings in this area are plentiful and can accommodate a wide range of travelers.

Luxury resorts dot the surrounding islands, including as the famed qualia on Hamilton Island and the Intercontinental Hayman Island Resort, where you're sure to make some lifelong memories. Camp right on the sands of Whitehaven at the National Park Campground at Southern End if you and your family decide to spend the night there. Alternately, if you're looking for some peace and quiet, the elevated Chance Bay campground is located on the opposite side of the island.

How to get there

Travelers can take ferries and fast catamarans from places like Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island, and Daydream Island to get to Whitehaven Beach for the day. You can get to Whitehaven Beach quickly and easily via Whitehaven Xpress and ZigZag Whitsundays, but you may also like Ocean Rafting and Red Cat Adventures, or the lengthier voyages provided by Wings Sailing Charters and iSail Whitsundays.

Whitehaven Beach also caters to the extravagant traveler, who may choose to hire a yacht, helicopter, or seaplane for a day of sightseeing in style. In the Whitsundays, two of the best tour companies are Air Whitsundays and Lux Whitsundays.

When to visit

You should think about if the time of year matters when deciding when to visit Whitehaven Beach. The greatest time to visit the most beautiful beach in the world is in the spring, between September and November, when temperatures are mild and the weather is typically dry. However, if you're a huge animal lover, you might want to plan your trip during the months of June through September, when whale watching is at its peak.

Whatever the case may be, make sure to bring along the basics: a hat, sunscreen, and, of course, swimwear to enjoy the cold waters of the area.

Access to Anse Source d’Argent

There is a beach called Anse Source d'Argent on the southwest corner of La Digue Island. It features some of La Digue's most stunning granite boulders as backdrops and gorgeous white beaches that are lapped by shallow emerald waters and shaded by swaying coconut palms.
